Q: What’s a domain name?
A: A domain name is the website name that you type into your web browser’s address bar. “goggle.com” and “trademe.co.nz” are examples of domain names.
Q: What’s a web host do?
A: A web host is a service provider who rents out computer space that you put your website on. These computers need to be quite robust to handle all of the requests from people trying to look at the websites on them. They also need to have a internet connection that’s up to the task. If they aren’t then your website my not be brow sable.
Q: What is CMS?
A: CMS is a way of updating a websites pages without needing to know how to code. Two of the most popular CMS systems are WordPress and Joomla which we use here at SparkDesign. Q: What’s WordPress?
A: WordPress is a CMS tool that is typically used for either relatively simple websites or blogs (on-line journals). That being said, don’t underestimate WordPress’s ability to deliver professional looking content. Personally I believe that the biggest benefit to WordPress is it’s ease of use. Q: What’s Joomla?
A: Joomla is another CMS package that we use at SparkDesign. Joomla is a very feature rich solution capable of catering to nearly any type of website requirement. It is however a bit more complex so may take slightly longer to come to terms with but this is the price of flexibility. Q: What’s Search Engine Optimization?
A: SEO is tuning your website to maximize it’s visibility to search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. This involves constant tweeking of site keywords and getting links on as many external sites as possible that the search engines trust. It also involves going over metrics to determine how your site’s links are flowing and what is driving traffic into your page (as well as what isn’t working).
